American Meteorological Society 2021 Virtual Meeting

January 9, 2021 @ 8:00 am - January 14, 2021 @ 5:00 pm

The annual meeting will occur on 9-14 January 2021 and will be convened virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The SATMOC committee coordinates four conferences and symposiums related to environmental satellite data observations and applications, with each having their own area of interest and focus.  We have found participation at virtual conferences trending larger than initially expected  not only due to much lower costs but also due to innovative ways organizers are using to stimulate the discussions we expect to have at conferences.

More information about SATMOC can be found here: https://www.ametsoc.org/stac/index.cfm/committees/committee-on-satellite-meteorology-oceanography-and-climatology/

Abstracts are due August 31.   Additional information about the four SATMOC conferences and symposiums and their URL links for submitting abstracts are shown below.  Each conference/symposium has their own dedicated organizing committee and they have been working diligently to come up with excellent session topics and side panels.

Each abstract has a $95 submission fee, and more information on  registration fees will be provided in September.

24th Conference on Satellite Meteorology, Oceanography, and Climatology (https://annual.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/2021/program-events/conferences-and-symposia/24th-conference-on-satellite-meteorology-oceanography-and-climatology/) is requesting papers on applications of satellite observations for enhanced scientific understanding, improved forecast skill, and more environmentally informed decision-making for meteorological, oceanographic, climatological, and other environmental problems. There will be a special session on environmental impacts during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

17th Annual Symposium on Operational Environmental Satellite Systems (https://annual.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/2021/program-events/conferences-and-symposia/17th-annual-symposium-on-operational-environmental-satellite-systems/) is requesting papers on the current and planned operational capabilities of the US and its international partners’ constellation of geostationary and polar-orbiting environmental satellites as well as other potential orbit strategies.

9th AMS Symposium on the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (https://annual.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/2021/program-events/conferences-and-symposia/ninth-ams-symposium-on-the-joint-center-for-satellite-data-assimilation-jcsda/) is requesting papers on developments in the Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration (JEDI), improvements and additions to contributions to the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM); improved data assimilation techniques, etc.

4th Conference on Earth Observing Smallsats (https://annual.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/2021/program-events/conferences-and-symposia/fourth-conference-on-earth-observing-smallsats/) is requesting papers on Smallsats, enabling technologies, miniaturization and new detector technologies, new SmallSat systems, operational architectures, and significant recent accomplishments in Earth observation with Smallsats with sounding capabilities including GPS RO,  etc.

In addition there are other conferences you may be interested in, and their descriptions can be found at:

https://annual.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/2021/call-for-papers/

For example:

11th Conference on Transition of Research to Operations The Conference will support  extending the chain from R2O to Research-to-Services [R2S] (societal benefits) and the indispensable Services-to-Research [S2R] feedback process. These enabling capabilities directly support the overall theme for this 2021 AMS Centennial Annual Meeting – “Strengthening engagement with communities through our science and services”.

16th Symposium on Societal Applications: Policy, Research and Practice

·       Applying Earth Observations to Build Resilience in Communities and Urban Areas

·       How can enterprise meet societal needs related to wildland fire and weather?

·       Weather-Ready Nation: Measuring Progress and Value Across the Enterprise

18th Conference on Space Weather

·       Agency Efforts in Space Weather: Priorities and Opportunities;

·       New Instruments, Platforms and Initiatives for Space Weather;

·       Space Weather Customer and Stakeholder Perspectives and Applications;

20th Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Science

·       Artificial Intelligence for Climate Applications

·       Artificial Intelligence Applied to Remote Sensing

·       Using Artificial Intelligence to Exploit Satellite Earth Observations
