SUMMARY:5th Space for Hydrology Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Fifth Space for Hydrology Workshop will take place in Lisbon\, Portugal\, from Monday 27 November to Friday 1 December 2023. \nThe European Space Agency\, in the context of the “Earth Observations Science for Society” Programme\, and CNES are organising a sequel joint event to Hydrospace2021 and EO4Water2020\, called 5th Space for Hydrology Workshop. This time around the Hydrospace Workshop is organised in collaboration with GEWEX (and other sponsors to be confirmed)\, seeking opportunities to explore joint solutions with a broader view on key science questions for Research and Development\, up to Operational use of remote sensing information. The aim of getting together during 5 days in a brainstorming workshop-style is to strengthen the collaboration between the four critical water communities: in situ\, modelling and space observation scientists as well as “non-scientific” users such as water managers to address the needs of the application community. \nPlease SAVE-THE-DATE! \nSoon you will be invited to submit your abstract(s) for an oral or a poster presentation.\nThe deadline for submitting your abstract(s) will be 3 September 2023.  (Mark that date too!) \nNo participation fees will be charged. DESCRIPTION:2023 International Ocean Colour Science Meeting\nSt. Petersburg\, FL\, USA\, 14-17 November 2023\n\n\n\n\n\nThe fifth International Ocean Colour Science (IOCS) meeting will be convened by the International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group (IOCCG) in partnership with the University of South Florida\, NASA\, and NOAA\, and will take place from 14-17 November 2023 in St. Petersburg\, Florida\, USA \n\n\nThe primary focus of the IOCS meetings is to serve as a venue for the ocean colour community to communicate their views\, ideas\, concerns and issues with the satellite agencies. The programme for the IOCS-2023 meeting will include invited keynote lectures\, agency talks\, breakout workshops\, poster sessions and community Town Halls. SUMMARY:2023 GEO AquaWatch Biennial 1-day Meeting: Toward Water Quality Forecasting
DESCRIPTION:Water Quality Information for the Benefit of Society\nEarth Observation of inland and coastal water quality: Toward water quality forecasting\n13 November 2023\, University of South Florida St. Petersburg\, St. Petersburg\, Florida\, USA  \na meeting of GEO AquaWatch in conjunction with the IOCS Meeting \n \nGEO AquaWatch invites you to a one-day workshop of the inland and coastal water quality community in conjunction with the ocean color science community.  \nParticipants are now invited to submit abstracts for both oral and coastal presentations. Abstracts will be accepted for consideration until April 30\, 2023. A broad range of Earth Observation topics are welcome from algorithm development to understanding the needs of the user community..  Early Career water quality professionals and scientists from groups and geographic regions under-represented in science are especially encouraged to apply.   \nOur workshop theme is Toward Water Quality Forecasting. \nThe use of Earth Observation (EO) for water quality applications is rapidly advancing. Inland and near-shore coastal environments deliver multiple ecosystem services that benefit society and yet only a fraction of global inland water systems are routinely monitored for water quality.  Observing inland and near-coastal water bodies makes remote sensing a valuable source of data on water quality and ecosystem condition at local and global scales.  \nThis workshop will be an opportunity for the community to respond to outcomes of the recent United Nations Water Conference and Water Action Agenda to reach sustainable development goals (SDG 6\, and related).   Other global initiatives like the UN Ocean Decade\, the Convention on Wetlands\, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction\, all hinge on better water management coordination and decision-making to benefit society. \nWater quality forecasting contributes to improved water management\, climate studies\, and achieving SDGs. Focusing our workshop on EO  multiscale forecasting of inland and near-shore coastal water conditions will be timely. Discussions of forecasting tools and observing opportunities provided by the upcoming PACE and GLIMR and Australian AquaWatch CSIRO missions are especially relevant in prioritising future GEO AquaWatch activities\, and this will be a workshop outcome.  \nGEO AquaWatch has a strong emphasis on Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies and these principles will be encouraged in setting the programme. DESCRIPTION:Workshop on the Validation of Satellite-derived Optical and Water Quality Parameters for Coastal and Inland Waters \nCo-sponsored by NASA and GEO AquaWatch \nJune 7-9th\, 2022 Madison\, Wisconsin \nSee Water Quality Validation (wisc.edu) for details and expression of interest form (March 31st deadline). \nValidation and uncertainty assessment are crucial to the successful acceptance of satellite-derived data products. Only through confidence in parameter uncertainty will there be increased uptake of these data products by the end-user community. This workshop will focus on the validation of water quality products derived from satellite ocean color sensors within optically complex nearshore-coastal and inland waters with the goal of constructing a global validation network.  The workshop will summarize and evaluate the state of current validation assets globally\, identify gaps in validation coverage and begin to design a framework to construct a global validation network for these critical waters. Workshop objectives include: \n\nReview and evaluation of current and planned validation-related activities.\nIdentifying validation gaps in spatial coverage as well as water types.\nReview and evaluation of current in situ and laboratory optical measurements and data acquisition protocols including instrument characterization and absolute radiometric calibration.\n Review and evaluation of satellite measurements in terms of representativeness for coastal and inland systems (e.g. pixel window\, match up timing).\nAssessing current optical and water quality database resources including repository archive\, preservation\, stewardship\, and access.\nBuilding global coordination through international partnerships for validation activities.\n\nThe workshop will cover a number of aspects related to validation including standardization of protocols\, instrumentation needs\, current validation research and operational efforts\, validation metrics\, interoperability\, and documenting and formatting validation data. \nApply to Attend\nThis workshop is being planned as an in-person gathering to encourage participant interaction.  We may have capabilities for virtual participation in certain program sections\, but participants are encouraged to attend in person. DESCRIPTION:Space is limited in person!  Register online here \nRationale\nThe United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Government of Ghana are jointly organizing a Conference with the support of the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) to promote the use of space technology in water management to the benefit of developing countries. \nThe Conference will be held in Accra\, Ghana\, from 10- 13 May 2022\, hosted by the University of Energy and Natural Resources on behalf of the Government of Ghana. \nThe Conference is the fifth international event focusing on applications of space technology for water in the series of conferences organised with financial assistance of the PSIPW and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology (ISNET). The initial event\, on the use of space technology for water management\, took place in Riyadh\, Saudi Arabia\, in April 2008\, the second conference was organized in March 2011 in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, the third conference in Rabat\, Morocco in April 2014 and the fourth in Islamabad\, Pakistan in February-March 2018. \nConference themes\nSpace technologies such as Earth observation and the resulting data\, satellite navigation and communication are increasingly important in observing the Earth’s water bodies at regular intervals and in the most remote corners of this planet. Moreover\, spin-off technologies such as filtering techniques used in space programmes find their application in water management. This conference will include inputs selected through a call for abstract and will aim at exchanges on the themes listed below: \n1. Participatory design thinking methods and rapid prototyping will be used to ease communication and knowledge exchange between indigenous women\, the workshop hosts and supportive community stakeholders. Such rapid prototyping techniques have proven to be successful in eliciting implicit knowledge and manifesting in the prototype. This can aid to overcome potential language barriers. We will foster discussions of data and technology challenges\, linkages between Earth Observation (EO) data providers and stakeholders\, EO capacity building and education.
