DESCRIPTION:Water Quality Continuum Atmospheric Correction Workshop\n20 October 2022 | Online | Free registration\nWithin the H2020 Water-ForCE project a Roadmap will be developed for the water component of the future Copernicus services. The signal of water is challengingly small in comparison to the atmosphere and for small to intermediate inland waters e.g. the adjacency effect forms a challenge. (IOCCG\, 2018). Therefore atmospheric correction and adjacency effect correction are extremely important processing steps for deriving water-leaving reflectance and higher level water quality products. The objectives of this workshop are: \n\nTo present ongoing R&D project results on i) atmospheric correction for inland and coastal waters and ii) atmospheric correction validation with in situ data for inland and coastal waters.\nTo provide recommendations (incl. additional spectral bands) for atmospheric correction and validation for future Copernicus water quality products\nTo prioritize recommendations\n\nRecommendations will be included in the Water-ForCE Roadmap. \nAgenda \nRegister here

SUMMARY:GEO AquaWatch Workshop: Validation of Satellite-derived Optical and Water Quality Parameters for Coastal and Inland Waters
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on the Validation of Satellite-derived Optical and Water Quality Parameters for Coastal and Inland Waters \nCo-sponsored by NASA and GEO AquaWatch \nJune 7-9th\, 2022 Madison\, Wisconsin \nSee Water Quality Validation (wisc.edu) for details and expression of interest form (March 31st deadline). \nValidation and uncertainty assessment are crucial to the successful acceptance of satellite-derived data products. Only through confidence in parameter uncertainty will there be increased uptake of these data products by the end-user community. This workshop will focus on the validation of water quality products derived from satellite ocean color sensors within optically complex nearshore-coastal and inland waters with the goal of constructing a global validation network.  The workshop will summarize and evaluate the state of current validation assets globally\, identify gaps in validation coverage and begin to design a framework to construct a global validation network for these critical waters. Workshop objectives include: \n\nReview and evaluation of current and planned validation-related activities.\nIdentifying validation gaps in spatial coverage as well as water types.\nReview and evaluation of current in situ and laboratory optical measurements and data acquisition protocols including instrument characterization and absolute radiometric calibration.\n Review and evaluation of satellite measurements in terms of representativeness for coastal and inland systems (e.g. pixel window\, match up timing).\nAssessing current optical and water quality database resources including repository archive\, preservation\, stewardship\, and access.\nBuilding global coordination through international partnerships for validation activities.\n\nThe workshop will cover a number of aspects related to validation including standardization of protocols\, instrumentation needs\, current validation research and operational efforts\, validation metrics\, interoperability\, and documenting and formatting validation data. \nApply to Attend\nThis workshop is being planned as an in-person gathering to encourage participant interaction.  We may have capabilities for virtual participation in certain program sections\, but participants are encouraged to attend in person. The workshop will have a capacity of 50 participants. DESCRIPTION:Space is limited in person!  Register online here \nRationale\nThe United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Government of Ghana are jointly organizing a Conference with the support of the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) to promote the use of space technology in water management to the benefit of developing countries. \nThe Conference will be held in Accra\, Ghana\, from 10- 13 May 2022\, hosted by the University of Energy and Natural Resources on behalf of the Government of Ghana. \nThe Conference is the fifth international event focusing on applications of space technology for water in the series of conferences organised with financial assistance of the PSIPW and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology (ISNET). The initial event\, on the use of space technology for water management\, took place in Riyadh\, Saudi Arabia\, in April 2008\, the second conference was organized in March 2011 in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, the third conference in Rabat\, Morocco in April 2014 and the fourth in Islamabad\, Pakistan in February-March 2018. \nConference themes\nSpace technologies such as Earth observation and the resulting data\, satellite navigation and communication are increasingly important in observing the Earth’s water bodies at regular intervals and in the most remote corners of this planet. Moreover\, spin-off technologies such as filtering techniques used in space programmes find their application in water management. This conference will include inputs selected through a call for abstract and will aim at exchanges on the themes listed below: \n1. Space-based technology and data for managing water-related extremes: Floods\n2. Space-based technology and data for managing water-related extremes: Water scarcity and drought\n3. Space and water quality\n4. Space\, water and health\n5. Space-based assessment – monitoring of groundwater resources\nPARTICIPATORY WORKSHOP FOR INDIGENOUS WOMEN AND THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES RELATED TO WATER\nOn one day of the conference\, UNOOSA organises a participatory workshop for Indigenous women or female Indigenous communities’ gatekeepers and community activists as a side event\, to make Indigenous women’s voices heard. The aim is to collect indigenous communities’ user needs in terms of water resources management and the protection of the water cycle towards the space sector. Participatory design thinking methods and rapid prototyping will be used to ease communication and knowledge exchange between indigenous women\, the workshop hosts and supportive community stakeholders. Such rapid prototyping techniques have proven to be successful in eliciting implicit knowledge and manifesting in the prototype. This can aid to overcome potential language barriers. The working language of the workshop will be English. \nTo re-empower and support Indigenous women in their role as water stewards\, as well as to learn from them and include them into the water governance dialogue UNOOSA invites them to this participatory workshop to address challenges. Read more \nParticipants\nThe Conference is being planned as a hybrid event with a maximum number of 100-150 participants in Accra. SUMMARY:GEO Week 2021- Accelerating Action (GEO 17th Plenary)
DESCRIPTION:There are major milestone events linked to global policy agendas taking place in 2021\, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP26\, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP15\, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. These will bring a new set of challenges and opportunities for the international community. During GEO Week 2021\, we will present the multidisciplinary activities of the GEO Work Programme that address these areas. This will be assessed through the lens of nexus thinking to highlight how the use of Earth observations in different sectors contributes to these efforts. \nThis online event will include the GEO -17 Plenary\, anchor and side events. Time will be scheduled each day for virtual networking. On Monday\, November 22\, the 56th Executive Committee will be held as a closed meeting.  Events occur 08:00 – 19:00 CET (GMT+2).  You can view the at-a-glance agenda here. \nGEO-17 Plenary: The GEO -17 Plenary Session will be held November 23- 26. The timing of the attached Week at Glance for the schedule of sessions. \nDelegations: The Plenary sessions will be broadcasted live and the session recordings will be made available afterwards. \nAnchor and Side Events: A series of events will be open to the GEO community for participation. These virtual\, interactive events will take place throughout the week. Recordings of the sessions will be made available on the GEO website. DESCRIPTION:The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is pleased to co-host with CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) a webinar entitled “Engaging Users in Solving Coastal Issues” on 5 October 2021 from 14h00-15h30 CEST. The aim of the webinar is to illustrate the utility of Earth observations (EO) in providing evidence-based solutions to environmental challenges. \nCEOS Coastal Observations\, Applications\, Services\, and Tools (COAST) seeks to engage with coastal stakeholders to guide the next stages of the project. At this community webinar\, you will learn more about CEOS COAST and see product demonstrations focused on solving coastal issues in pilot regions centered on the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh) and the Chesapeake Bay (US). COAST EO applications will be co-developed and co-designed with users to improve decision making and enhance products with local data for validation. Initial focus areas include: Flooding and Inundation\, Bathymetry/coastline mapping\, Coastal Eutrophication\, and Turbidity/Sedimentation. \nBy showcasing some of the EO products and services currently available\, the aim is to gather feedback and to use this to refine and tailor existing products to other coastal communities around the world. The development of new EO products will also be considered if issues are raised through this consultation. \nObjectives:  \n\nEngage users in co-designing/co-developing products with CEOS COAST product developers at upcoming small regional workshops in Spring 2022; and\nIdentify opportunities for GEO and CEOS to help users solve their coastal issues.\n\nOutcomes:  \n\nList of regional and global stakeholders (and sustainment funding partners) to engage with further on CEOS COAST product development.\nUser requirements (such as sensors\, satellite retrieval correction algorithms\, data spatial and temporal resolutions\, custom applications using EO).\n\nTarget audience:  \nStakeholders (such as Small Island Developing States\, coastal/estuary transitional waters managers\, Indigenous communities) who want to use Earth observations to make evidence-based decisions to address coastal issues. \nRegister Here

The abstract submission deadline is 14 June 2021. \nThe Science Committee\, under the leadership of Prof. dr. A.J. Han Dolman (VU University Amsterdam)\, will be assisting in shaping up the details of the sessions. DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce the 2021 NOAA Environmental Data Management Workshop (EDMW) call for abstracts is now open!  This is a NOAA Internal-only Workshop. \nThe EDMW will be held virtually the week of August 16-20. The theme for the 2021 meeting is “Maximizing the Value of NOAA Data through Investment\, Innovation\, and Governance.” We invite abstract submissions (presentations\, demonstrations\, and posters) that address the meeting theme\, and can be applied within these breakout sessions.
