Water quality challenges and support ne..  UN Publication: Water quality challenges and support needs: insights from a UNESCO IHP survey of Member State priorities  2026  abstract: A recent survey by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) gathered responses from Member States to identify emerging water quality challenges and support needs. The findings show that domestic water use remains the area of greatest concern, with organic pollution, pathogens and nutrients the most frequently cited pollutants. Poorly managed urban wastewater emerged as the leading pollution source. Importantly for the water quality community, monitoring was identified as a major capacity gap, particularly due to financial and technical constraints, while implementation of existing regulations and management plans was the most significant challenge overall. Respondents highlighted needs for stronger monitoring systems, laboratory capacity, technical tools, knowledge sharing, and investment to translate water quality knowledge into effective action.
